How to Identify Watches Worn in Movies, Shows, and by People - How to spot a watch
Four ways that work
Spotted a watch on screen and can't figure out what it is? You're not alone. Whether it's on a movie character, a TV show, or a celebrity you follow, watch identification is one of the most searched topics in the watch community.
Here are four methods that actually work.
1. Search a Dedicated Watch Database
The fastest starting point is a database built specifically for this. Watchreel catalogs watches worn by characters in movies and TV shows, as well as by real people, actors, athletes, musicians, and more.
Search by film title, show, person, or watch brand. If the watch has been identified and documented, you'll find it here along with the exact model and where to buy it.
2. Use Google Lens
If you have a clear screenshot or photo, Google Lens can sometimes identify the watch directly from the image. There are a few ways to use it:
- Right-click any image in Chrome and select "Search image with Google lens." This will let you mark the watch directly in your browser.
- Add Google Lens to your search bar via Chrome settings for even quicker access.
- Upload an image straight in to google's search bar if you have a saved file.
Note: the right-click method only works in Chrome.
Crop tightly around the watch face for best results. This works well for well-lit, clear shots. Dark or blurry scenes make it harder.
3. Ask on Reddit
The watch community on Reddit is genuinely helpful when it comes to identification. Three subreddits worth trying:
- r/Watches — one of the largest watch communities online. Identification posts are allowed on Fridays in the weekly megathread.
- r/WatchIdentifier — built specifically for this. Post anytime.
- The film or show's subreddit — fans often know every prop in detail. Try r/BreakingBad, r/Succession, r/MissionImpossible, or whichever series you're watching.
Include a clear image and note what scene it appears in. The more detail, the faster you get an answer.
4. Contact Watchreel Directly
If the watch isn't in the database yet, send a message. Watchreel accepts tips and identification requests via Instagram DM or email. If it can be confirmed, it goes into the database.
This is also how a lot of entries get added, readers spotting watches that haven't been documented yet.
Why Bother?
Most people searching for this aren't buying on impulse. They saw something that caught their eye and want to know more. That curiosity is worth following.
Some of the most interesting watches in the world have appeared on screen first. And a lot of them are more affordable than you'd expect.
